園庭にあるケヤキに沢山の生き物が集まるようになりました。
昨日はクマゼミが２０匹くらい居たと思います。

　園庭にケヤキを植えたのには理由があります。
ケヤキは春から若葉が広がり、秋には紅葉し落ち葉になります。夏には木陰を作り、紫外線から子どもたちを守ってくれます。
枝が上に向いて広がるので、普段の保育やミニオリンピック(運動会)などでも子どもたちの姿を妨げる事がなく、枝ぶりがいいので、セミや小鳥が留まりやすく、子どもたちの遊びに沢山生かす事ができます。そして私の中では虫がつきにくいというのも候補の一つでした。ところが、計算が狂ってしまう事態になりました。園庭の小さなケヤキには毛虫（イラガ）が沢山ついてしまい葉を全て食べてしまったのです。
　自然のものですから予想と違う事があるにしても誤算です。でも、これを機に「この虫は危険だ」と言うことを子どもたちに伝える事ができました。すぐに駆除を行い、木の周りを立ち入り禁止にしています。子どもたちにはイラガの写真を配り各クラスで説明を行いました。今ある園庭のあり様を伝え、子どもたちなりに理解を深める事が大切だと思っています。
　現在、イチョウ、ケヤキ、サクラ、オリーブの木を植えていますが、もう２種類、植えたい木があります。それはクヌギの木と食べられる実がなる木です。
どちらも園庭には欠かせない木だと思っていますし、子どもたちに沢山の経験を与えてくれるものだと思っています。

Environment (trees)
Many creatures have come to gather in the zelkova trees in the playground. I think there were about 20 black cicadas yesterday. The reason we decided to plant zelkova trees is that their young leaves spread from spring, which create a nice shade from the UV rays of summer. Then in autumn they turn a beautiful red before falling in winter. Since the branches spread upward they do not interfere with anything going on on the playground. The children are able to play freely and we will hold our mini-olympic games with no problems. The branches are more than strong enough for cicadas and small birds and can even be used for children’s play.
Another reason they were chosen was that they are supposed to be resistant to insects. However, this calculation turned out to be wrong. A swarm of caterpillars (monema flavescens) laid siege to the small zelkova and ate all of its leaves.It was a miscalculation and totally unexpected, but being a natural thing, I was able to teach the children the danger some insects present.
In the meantime, I immediately sprayed the tree with insecticide and made the area around the tree off limits. We handed out pictures of the caterpillars and explained to the children about the dangers. I think it is important to always convey the current state of the garden and deepen the understanding of the children.
Currently, we have a ginkgo, 2 zelkovas, a cherry, and 2 olive trees in the playground, but there are two more types of trees that we would like to plant. On our wishlist is an oak and an edible fruit tree. I think both of them are indispensable for the garden, and I think they will give the children a lot of experience.
